About Us

History of the Library:

The Cairo Public Library was founded in 1963 by a group of individuals that set out to better Cairo. The library has received many awards and accolades over the years but perhaps the most important one is the Community Improvement Award given to the Monday Council Club for starting the Cairo Public Library. It has been located in two other buildings before finding its current home (15 Railroad Ave.) in 2012. Debra Kameke (Former Director) over saw the transition from the town hall building to the current placement before retiring in 2023 and turning the reins over to Corinne Tatavitto (Current Director). The library is a municipal library funded by the town, school and accepts donations from its patrons. The Library has had many trials and tribulations most recently losing over 5000 books due to a mold in 2024 but they continue to serve their community through materials, programming, and outreach.

The function of the Cairo Public Library is to provide the Cairo community with access to a balanced collection of books and other materials to serve their educational, cultural and recreational needs.
